Patriot (Style) Games
The unofficial start of summer is here! Memorial Day weekend has come to an end, but you know what that means: time to shed some layers and give way to looks that welcome the sun! Sun worshipers, rejoice! The holiday was not only a great opportunity for cookouts and that first beach trip this new season, but also a good time to demonstrate a little patriotism by rocking a bit of red, white and blue in your weekend attire. I’m not necessarily suggesting a full-out flag bearing homage (though if that’s your thing, have at it). Stars and stripes are great, but if your brand of patriotic panache calls for a bit more subtlety, you might appreciate today’s post.
Today’s look features a navy and white striped off-the-shoulder bodycon from Nasty Gal (www.nastygal.com) ($40). Though the pattern brings to mind a bit of a nautical flavor, the neckline and slit, add sophistication and even a little bit of sexy. Bright and bold accessories in signature red helped pop the look and add some flair. The vibrant accessory colors and bold print of the dress were certainly attention-grabbers, but I have to say my favorite part of the ensemble was the hat. It was the crown that helped make the lasting impression. I’m a sucker for a big brim and this one did not disappoint. Snagged from Luxury Divas (www.luxurydivas.com) last summer for just $30, I loved it so much I had to get it in other colors too. (Sidebar: When you find a piece that speaks to you, get it in as many options as you can!) Let’s face it, nothing adds that “hattitude” like a big brim chapeau. Add one to your next dressy look and see if it doesn’t up your style game. Shoes were found on eBay and inspired by the popular Steve Madden Sassy and Aquazzura Wild Thing sandals; clutch, found at Charming Charlie (www.charmingcharlie.com).
I’ve mentioned before that though I confess to being a complete fashion & style junkie, I am all about getting the look for less. That really is part of the whole focus of this blog, to show that you don’t have to break the bank to be fashionable. I believe in the “frugal fashionista” principle and working within your budget/price point. Style is for everyone after all, not just celebrities or the elite.
Here are a few other patriotic and fabulous blogger red, white & blue looks that I love. Solids, prints, dressed up or down, from petite to curvy girls, they show that you can celebrate summer holidays in style. Though Memorial Day has come and gone, it’s not too late. You can still get in on the patriot style games for July 4th. It’ll be here before you know it, so go ahead and get your flag-inspired fabulousity on. God bless America!
